James G. Simmons (retired) DVM, MS

Dr. James Simmons grew up in Bridgewater, Virginia, and earned his B.S. in General Science from Bridgewater College. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia, where he was inducted into the honorary societies of Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Zeta. While at UGA, he also served two terms on the Veterinary School’s Honor Court.

Dr. Simmons went on to complete a Master of Science in Surgery from the University of Virginia Medical School. Prior to returning to the Shenandoah Valley, he worked in small animal practices in Baltimore, MD, and Charlottesville, VA, and held positions at the University of Virginia Medical School as Assistant Director of the Vivarium and Assistant Professor of Surgery.

In 1974, Dr. Simmons opened Ashby Animal Clinic and has served as a dedicated small animal clinician ever since.

He is married, a proud father of two daughters, and grandfather to six grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Dr. Simmons has contributed to both his community and the veterinary profession through his involvement in the VVMA, AVMA, Blue Ridge Veterinary Medical Association, D.C. Academy of Veterinary Medicine, Kiwanis Club of Harrisonburg, the local Chamber of Commerce, and as an elder in the Presbyterian Church.
